Photograph the landscapes and night sky in Joshua Tree National Park. We're going at new moon to have dark, star-filled (and hopefully clear) skies! Day locations will include the various rock formations, cactus gardens and of course the Joshua trees in the north part of the park. At night we will do a combination of light painting, night sky and star trail photography. There is NO FEE for this workshop. Please contact me if you are interested in participating and for information about camera gear and light painting supplies to bring. We will also visit the Living Desert Zoo & Gardens in Palm Desert for a day of photography.

Photograph these incredible trees, stark landscapes and night sky at Bristlecone Pine. We're going just before new moon with early moon sets to have dark, star-filled skies. Click here for a CALENDAR of the daylight and moon phases.

Day locations will include the Schulman Grove, which has two hiking trails with many opportunities to photograph the unique landscape. Also we'll visit the Patriarch Grove at the summit, which has dramatic views of the sierras with the pine trees. At night with clear skies, we will do a combination of light painting, night sky and star trail photography.

Please contact me if you are interested in participating and for information about camera gear and light painting supplies to bring.

Please join our 3rd annual Death Valley Photography Workshop, which  will be scheduled for October or November 2014 - the dates are still being worked out, so check back for the exact dates later.  The workshop will span 3 days (Weds. - Sat.) and be led by Stephen Burns & Beverly Houwing. We plan to photograph in many iconic places of magnificent Death Valley and surrounding ghost towns. These locations include the Mesquite Sand Dunes, Zabriskie Point, Badwater, The Race Track and Rhyolite. Stephen & Beverly will lead the group to each location at the best times for optimal light for shooting and guide the student as to what they should be looking for in lighting and composition. We will also take advantage of the new moon to capture images of the star-filled skies, do long exposure star trails and learn to light paint subjects creatively.

We are accepting a maximum of 12 individuals so please contact us ASAP if you are interested.

Stephen is a photographer and digital artist with a creative and keen eye for composition, High Dynamic Range (HDR) and panoramic photography. Stephen has published numerous books on using Photoshop for creative projects and enhancing photographs.

Beverly is experienced in light painting, night sky photography and landscape photography. She has had her images of wildlife, landscapes and night photography in gallery exhibits in Los Angeles, as well as used to encourage preserving Joshua Tree and Mojave by the National Parks Conservation Association and to promote
Eco-tourism in Africa.

With such complementary skills, students will learn to improve their composition, shoot images for HDR to extend tonal range far beyond a single exposure, create panoramic images from a series of pictures, photograph stars trails in long exposures, capture the beauty of the night sky in a single exposure and creative photography techniques with "light painting".

Mesquite Sand Dunes & Trees with Star TrailsThe format of the workshop is to shoot in the early morning and then have an image review and discussion in the afternoon followed by a late afternoon shoot and a night shoot. After each shoot we will select a quiet place to share and discuss our experiences. This discussion will be instrumental for improving students’ technique and vision as an artist. On a clear night we will choose a location to capture the spectacular night sky and star trails.

Included with the workshop will be a session on Photoshop techniques geared toward landscape and nature photographs, which will be on the Saturday morning, of the workshop.

Cost: The workshop instruction fee is $895 per person

Each individual will be responsible for booking their own room as you can share a double room if you like. We will be staying in the park at either Stovepipe Wells or Furnace Creek Lodge or just outside in Beatty, NV. A detailed agenda of the workshop will be provided to attendees, so we can plan to meet for each shoot at the scheduled time.

For any questions, please contact Steve at: (760) 436-9921 or Beverly  at (310) 488-8848.

To register for the workshop, please contact us to reserve your spot -- we will set up an  Eventbrite page to handle payment in the summer.
